Script lettering: I loved you at your darkest
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A hand-drawn lettering design in black ink on white paper, set out as a quotation in flowing script. The words read I loved you at your darkest, with the reference Romans 5:8 in a smaller, upright style to the right. The linework is even and monoline, with no shading, and the composition is a simple centred layout on a light background.

The snow had shut the Ferrier Arms for nine days when Tom Holloway came in off the moor with his coat frozen stiff at the hem. Nobody came in winter except drovers and the occasional fool, and he was both, I decided. My mother had left me the inn and a ledger of debts I could never make add up, so I kept the fire banked and asked no questions.

He drank my mother's gin without tasting it and talked to the window. Each night he came down later, and each night I sat with him past closing, because the alternative was listening to the clock. He told me about a brother lost on the fells and a letter he had burned without opening. I didn't tell him he was being a fool. I said the sort of things my mother used to say, badly, and he laughed at me for it, which I counted as progress.
On the ninth night the thaw broke with a crack like a rifle shot from the roof. He stood, reached for his coat, and said he couldn't ask me to wait for him to be fit company. I told him I had never waited for anyone fit. I took the pencil from behind the bar and wrote on the back of a beer mat, in my best round hand, the thing he had told me he needed to hear. He read it twice, folded it into his breast pocket, and walked out into the blue light without a word.
The road was clear by noon. A year later a postcard came from Carlisle with no return address and one line in pencil: still here. I pinned it above the till, beside the ledger, and it has outlasted the ledger.
