Script quote about New Year resolutions
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows two blocks of black cursive script text on a plain white background. The first block reads I'm not making any resolutions this year, followed by a second block reading nobody likes a sober skinny bitch anyway. The linework is solid and even, with no shading, and the composition is left-aligned with generous white space around the text.

Dot had been asked for her resolutions by the whole of the Anchor's back bar, so she wrote them on a beer mat in her best copperplate, the only handwriting her mother ever praised. Eleven names, eleven promises, every one of them a small lie she could spell beautifully.

Her brother Ray leaned over the bar and read them aloud. "Give up gin. Learn the accordion. Ring Aunt Pat back." He snorted at the last one. Dot took the mat back, turned it over, and wrote the line she had been saving since October: I'm not making any resolutions this year. Then she left a gap, the way her mother always left a gap before the sermon.
Bev, the landlady, read it upside down and laughed so hard she had to sit on a crate of lemonade. Dot wrote the second line in the same careful hand, the one with the long looping tails that said she had been raised by women who wrote thank-you notes for everything, even bad weather. Ray tried to take the mat for a souvenir, and she told him it was a legal document.
At midnight the church bells on the far side of the estuary began to ring, and the mat went into Ray's jacket pocket. Bev pinned it above the till the following morning, and it stayed there all year, its ink going soft from the steam off the tea urn, until the new December came and somebody asked Dot what she had promised herself this time.
