Script quote, Just a girl who decided to go for it
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a line of flowing, monoline script lettering in solid black, arranged across four lines of text on an off-white background. A diagonal hatched strip sits at the top edge, resembling a piece of tape. The lettering is evenly weighted and centred, with loops and long descenders on the letters g, j and f.

He stood on the path reading the words I had lettered across the door in white gloss, copied freehand from the tea towel you sent me at Christmas. Just a girl who decided to go for it. He read it aloud in the voice people use for a joke they have been told not to laugh at, and I waited, because I had nothing to add. Then he cleared his throat, said it was a bit much for a plot of allotment land, and I said that depended on how much land a girl was allowed to take up. He went back to his car without his clipboard.
I have been thinking about that since. Thirty-one years on the switchboard, and nobody once asked me what I wanted to grow. So this spring I set the seed trays along the windowsill, wrote each variety on a strip of masking tape in capitals, and sowed the lot. The runner beans are up. Four of the leeks came through the cold. Tell Dennis the dahlias are his if he wants them, though I don't think he will.
Come on the bus next Sunday and bring your secateurs. The kettle works now.
Love, Ivy
