Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two forearms are shown side by side, each carrying part of a line of handwritten script in black ink. The upper arm reads Together forever, never apart, and the lower arm continues with maybe in distance but never in heart. A small red heart sits at the end of the lower line, the only colour in the piece.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tea towel had lived folded in the dresser drawer since their nan died, its hem gone soft from years of being pressed flat. Maggie found it the night before her train, and she sat at the kitchen table with the kettle going cold while Dot pretended not to watch her.

Nan had stitched the first line in blue thread when she was a girl, Together forever, never apart, and somebody later had written the rest on the back in biro, in a hurry, as if the words might escape. Dot wanted to keep the towel whole. Maggie said it would only fray in a suitcase, so they cut it along the place where the thread ended, one half for each of them, and Dot copied the second line out again in her neat school hand before the ink could fade.

The first winter, the postcards came from Aberdeen on the ferry days, each one smelling faintly of diesel and the harbour wall. Dot kept them in a biscuit tin under the stairs. Some weeks there was only a single line in the corner, and Dot read it aloud to the empty kitchen just to hear the room answer.

When the spring boat docked, Maggie came up the gangway with her bag over one shoulder and her half of the towel folded in her coat pocket. Dot had brought hers. They laid the two pieces side by side on the wet slipway, and the stitched words met exactly at the cut, the last full stop sitting just beside a small red thread heart that Nan had sewn there years before, when nobody had yet thought to ask why.
