Two forearms with matching fine line script tattoos, the upper one reading Together forever, never apart and the lower one reading maybe in distance but never in heart with a small red heart.

Paired script quote tattoos on two forearms

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two forearms are shown side by side, each carrying a line of handwritten script that reads as one sentence split across the arms. The linework is thin and dark grey-black, with a single small red heart at the end of the lower line. The photograph is taken close and slightly from above against a light background, with a gold-toned bracelet visible on the lower wrist.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Nell, the man in Fishguard wanted forty pounds for the lettering alone, so I told him to write it small and slant it the way Mam wrote our names on the backs of photographs. He grumbled, but he did it. Your copy will have reached Crewe by now, if the post is as slow between us as it always is.

We agreed on the words at Mam's kitchen table, the night before you took the boat to Dublin with one suitcase and a cardigan that wasn't yours. Together forever, never apart. You crossed out apart, wrote something else, then changed your mind back. I kept that scrap of paper folded in my purse for a year, until the pencil on it faded to the colour of weak tea.

Last Thursday a parcel came with no note, only a photograph of your arm laid against mine on the draining board, the two lines running on like one long sentence cut in half. I laughed until the kettle boiled over. The lower line carries the distance bit, and the little red heart at its end is the one thing you insisted on, because you said a heart is the only word that never needs translating.

So write back and tell me whether the heart is still bright, and whether the sea has got into your ink the way it got into mine. I will keep the other half of the sentence safe until you come home to finish it.
