Script quote along the side ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a two-line handwritten script quotation in black ink, reading The ones we love never truly leave us. The letterforms have a smooth, fairly even monoline weight with some thicker strokes at the joins. The lettering runs diagonally across the flank of the torso, with a blue fabric edge visible at the top of the frame.

The kettle on the gimballed stove had not boiled since the weather turned, and I had stopped expecting it to. He had written it for the Christmas cards we sent to the widows along the Tyne, the ones Mrs Hale always said were too cheerful for grief. Then he never sent that one, because Tom reckoned a card was a lie if you had to sign it for the company. I put the scrap in my apron pocket with the bread knife and the pencil stub.
Next morning the galley floor was wet from the sea coming over the bow, and the ham was going green in its tin. I pinned the paper above the stove with a bent drawing pin, the way he'd pinned the rota, and when the lamp swung the words swung with it, catching the light and losing it again. It was a daft thing to do with a fried breakfast waiting on the hotplate. The lads came in soaked, read it over my shoulder without a word, and took their plates.
By the time we raised the Humber light the paper had gone soft at the corners, and someone had written underneath it in capitals, COOK'S ORDERS. I didn't mind. I rolled the dough a little harder and left it where it was.
