Script quote: I'll keep you safe, you keep me wild
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
Two lines of handwritten black script read I'll keep you safe on the top line and you keep me wild below it, with the final letters trailing into long tails. The linework is a single consistent weight with no shading, and the wording sits on a plain white background. The composition is a simple horizontal design with the second line running slightly wider than the first.

Margaret had written the note three times before she was satisfied, and still the ink bled through the cheap paper at the word safe, so anyone holding it up to the window would have seen the shadow of her hesitation. Hetty Crane ran the boarding house on Carbery Terrace with a ledger under one arm and a torch in her apron pocket, and she never read other people's post, though she had a way of knowing what was in it anyway.

Outside, the wind came off the grey harbour in long shoves, rattling the sash in room four, where Tom Ashby had slept since August. He was a rigger on the herring boats, and his hands smelled of tar even after he scrubbed them at the kitchen sink. Margaret had watched him come up the steps with his kitbag every evening for a month, and she had decided, the way you decide to jump off a pier, that she would not stay behind the breakfast hatch forever.
On the last morning he came down early, before the kippers were on. She slid the folded page across the oilcloth between the salt cellar and the marmalade. He read it standing, one finger resting on the first line, and then he laughed, a short surprised sound, because the second line was the one she had rewritten most. You keep me wild. He said nothing for a long while. The gulls went on crying over the bins.
When he finally tucked the paper into his breast pocket, he made no promises. He only said the tide turned at six and that he'd be back on the Thursday, if the weather let him. Margaret picked up the teapot and found her hands perfectly steady, which surprised her more than anything else that morning.
