Script quote: imperfection is beauty, madness is genius
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a line-drawn script quote in black ink on a plain white background, reading imperfection is beauty on the first line and madness is genius on the second. The letterforms use flowing, looping calligraphic strokes with varied line thickness and large capitals. The design is centred and fills the frame with no body part, skin or shading visible.

The ledger came to you in January, wrapped in a tea towel that smelled of paraffin and wet dog. Your aunt Morwenna had kept the books for Lower Fold for forty-one years, and every column was ruled in pencil before she wrote a figure in ink. Eggs, ewes, the coal man, the bull's hire fee. You sat at the scrubbed table with the burner ticking and sleet rattling the yard gate, and you tried to make the totals agree with the bank.

They did not agree. In March of 1979 she had carried a seven across as a one, and the error ran for pages, each month a little further wrong, until the sums stopped meaning anything at all. Then, in the margin beside a note about a lost lamb, in her cramped looping hand, was a line you had to tilt the book to read: imperfection is beauty, madness is genius. Underneath, smaller, as if written for herself on a bad morning: or so the vet says.
You laughed out loud, alone in the kitchen, and the dog lifted its head from the rug. Nobody had ever told you the books could be beautiful. You pictured her at this table in the dark before milking, pencil behind one ear, refusing to rub out her mistakes because rubbing out would have meant pretending they had never happened.
By the end of the week you had stopped correcting. You copied the line onto the back of a feed invoice, looping the capitals the way she did, and pinned it above the sink where the frost ferned the glass. The sums still do not add up. The sheep are fed.
