Black handwritten script lettering design reading it is okay to not be okay, shown on a plain white background with no body part visible.

Script quote: it is okay to not be okay

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A handwritten script design in black ink reads it is okay to not be okay over three lines, with the final word ending in a small full stop. The linework is fine and even, with thin strokes and a slightly looser, cursive rhythm that gives a personal, pen-written feel. The text sits centred on a plain white background with no shading or extra decoration.

Long after the seawalls had gone under, the people of Caddon Reach kept a glass bell in the lighthouse, and nobody rang it for weather. They rang it when someone had gone quiet for three days running. Ada Mirrin, who kept the bell, had rung it only twice in forty years, and both times the person had come up the stair with their boots unlaced and sat down without a word.

The third time it was a boy named Tobin Vell, who had walked in from the salt flats with a sack of dried kelp and a face like a shut door. Ada didn't ask him anything. She set a kettle on the iron ring and took down the slate from its nail, the one with old letters scratched into it by a woman nobody remembered, the ones the town had copied onto every doorpost since the water came in. She rubbed a clean patch with her thumb and wrote it out in her own hand, slowly, the way her grandmother had taught her, letter by letter: it is okay to not be okay.

Tobin read it twice. Then he laughed, short and rough, the way a gull complains. "Who told you to write that?"

"Nobody told me. It was on the slate when I got it." She poured the water. "I used to think it was a kindness. Then I thought it was a dodge. Now I think it's just what a person needs said plainly, by someone who isn't going to fuss."

He drank his tea and watched the light turn over the sea. Somewhere below them the big bell hung still, and he didn't need it to ring.
