Script quote on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a forearm carrying a four-line quote in black cursive script, reading She dreamed of paradise followed by every time she closed her eyes. The lettering uses even, fine black linework with solid, consistent ink and no shading. The text runs vertically down the arm against soft skin tones and a purple damask backdrop.

Dear Mari,

Brother Anselm has not spoken to me since Tuesday, when I told him the ink in the north scriptorium is nothing but oak gall and rainwater, and that the fine black we use for capitals will outlast us both. He thinks I am being impertinent. I think he has been grinding the same jar for forty years and refuses to look at it.
The real reason I write is the margin. We have been copying the Ashby Psalter, the one the abbey sold to a bookseller in Lincoln before the fire. On folio nineteen, someone long dead wrote a line in small, slanting script beside a drawing of a woman asleep under a pear tree. It reads: she dreamed of paradise, every time she closed her eyes. No name, no date. Only the tree and the stillness of her hands.
I scraped at the vellum last night with a pumice stone, meaning to clean it for the binder, and the words would not come away. They only grew sharper under the lamp, as if the ink had been waiting for me. Anselm says I should leave it be. I have not told him that I think I know the hand. It is mine, or will be, if I am still here when the pear tree bears fruit again.
I have decided to leave it be. Some pages are not ours to finish. Write soon, and tell Father I have not forgotten his boots.
Your brother, Tobias
