Script quote reading 'Don't forget to love yourself' on
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The photo shows a three-line quote, 'Don't forget to love yourself', written in flowing black script across the inner wrist. The lettering is fine and even, with solid black ink and smooth connecting strokes. The text fills the centre of the frame against plain pale skin, with a blurred pavement visible in the background.

The soldier came to my stall at the Canopic gate just after the bells for the third hour, with ink already on his fingers and the look of a man who had started a letter and given up on it. He set a wax tablet on my table, then took it back again as if it might bite him.

"My sister can read," he said, "but she will not thank me for a long letter. Make it short, scribe. Make it sound like I am not dying in the desert." I asked him what he wanted her to know. He stared at the reed case for a long while. The tablet was full of grain prices and the names of the men in his century, and none of it was what he meant.
I told him to say the last thing first and work backwards. He laughed, not kindly, then said it slowly, as if carrying a full cup: "Don't forget to love yourself." Our mother said it to us every morning, he said, and we thought she was being soft. I wrote it across the top of the sheet in the round joined hand the schools teach, each stroke running into the next so the words seemed to pour off the reed. He folded the papyrus, pressed his thumb to the seal, and gave me two extra obols for my trouble.
After he left I sat with the reed still wet in my fingers and worked out that I had not written a line for myself in eleven years. I took a clean sheet, dipped the pen, and found I had nothing to say. I sat with the blank papyrus until the light moved off the table and the bells rang for noon.
