Sea turtle with world map shell on the back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A sea turtle is outlined in bold black linework, with its flippers and head in solid black and a soft grey wash. The shell is filled with greyscale shading that forms the continents of a world map, with small dots marking islands. The design sits centrally on bare skin against a plain, softly lit background.

The third time the boy asked why the turtle was so slow, his grandmother put down the net she was mending and looked past the harbour wall. The sea was flat and pewter-coloured. Out there, she said, a turtle was swimming with the whole world on its back, and it could not afford to hurry, because a world shaken off a shell does not come back.

Tomas said the world was too big for any turtle to carry. She said that was true, which was why the work had been given to it at all. The gods had searched the ocean for the creature with the patience to hold what no one else could lift. So it carried the hills and rivers in a pattern of grey, the long coasts and the scattered islands like crumbs of salt, and it had never once let them slide.

Tomas asked what happened on the days the turtle grew tired. Grandmother said it rested in the warm shallows where the fishermen's children swam, and the land settled a little on its back, and the small islands shifted, which was why maps had to be redrawn every few generations. Nobody had ever seen the turtle drop anything. Boys who swam too far out were always brought back by a dark shape under the water, nudging them gently towards the shore.

Tomas watched the water for a long time. Then he picked up the net and began to mend the torn square where a crab had got through, humming the slow tune she used for hauling. Far out, the sea rose and fell, and something very patient kept on going.
