Dennis Okafor had cut moulds at the works in Redditch for nineteen years and had never been asked to make a figure with a red bob and a beauty spot. The note pinned to the order said only "summer line, a bit of fun, keep it tasteful", which he read three times before carrying it to the bench.

He worked nights, radio low, the cutting head humming. The yellow was simple. The bob took a week of trial pulls. The bodice gave him more trouble until his daughter, home from art college, sketched two round badges on a beer mat and lettered the word across them in capitals. Dennis laughed until he had to sit down, then cut every letter himself so the word would sit straight on the curve.

The line went out in August. Seaside arcades bought most of the crates and filled their claw machines with her, and by September she was on every pier from Clacton to Weston. Nobody wrote in. Only one crate came back, split at a corner, with a single figure rolling loose in the straw, her bob chipped and one cup scuffed down to bare yellow so the word read OG.

Dennis carried her home in his coat pocket and stood her on the kitchen windowsill, where the afternoon sun caught the red. "You'll sell her," his daughter said, peering at the chip. "She's got character." He said nothing, but he turned her to face the allotments and left her there.
