Small feather tattoo on a hand
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small feather is tattooed in black and grey on the side of a finger, near the knuckle. The feather has delicate linework with soft grey shading along its vane. The photograph shows a hand with navy nails dotted in white, two thin metal rings on the middle finger, and a light wooden surface behind.

The jay had been at the Bramleys since July, and by the first week of September my grandmother had stopped pretending the gate latch was rusted. Closing it was my job. I was seventeen and the gate was the only thing on the farm I was trusted with, so I took it seriously, which meant I had been leaving it open on purpose.

That was how I came to be under the Egremont tree on a Tuesday, with a windfall in each pocket, looking for the bird. Jays are louder than their colour suggests, but I couldn't find it. What I found instead was a single flight feather snagged on a nail in the wall, barred blue and black, its quill pale as a bone. I pocketed it, because Gran always said a jay's feather brought someone asking after you.
Someone did. A man in a van with a clipboard came up the lane wanting to buy the bottom orchard for houses. Gran wouldn't sell. He left a card under the sugar bowl, and I read the number three times before I slid it into the biscuit tin with the feather, where it could keep the other one company.
The jay was back on the wall at dusk, watching the lane as if it had been waiting for the van to leave. I threw it a windfall. It took the apple, looked at me the way Gran looks at a bad marrow, and flew off with the Bramley bruised in its beak. Some trades are fair, I told myself, even when nobody asked me to make them.
