Semicolon in a cracked stone effect
Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a semicolon, with its dot and comma drawn as two shaded black forms with soft grey highlights. Surrounding it, the skin is rendered as broken, cracked stone or masonry with speckled grey texture, giving a sense of the design breaking through the surface. The image is a close crop of the arm against a blurred background, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

Brother Anselm,

The north wall came down on the feast of St Cuthbert, as I had warned Prior Edwin it would, and I am writing to you from the rubble with dust still in my beard. When the old mortar gave way I expected nothing but rot. Instead, behind the third buttress, the stones were laid in a shape I could not at first believe: a round dark slate set high in the masonry, with a glint across its top, and beneath it a curved hook of slate, the whole thing cracked so that it seemed to be pushing out through the wall rather than sunk into it.
Edwin wants it broken up before the bishop's visitors arrive. He says a stop mark cut into the chapel fabric will be read as a sermon nobody asked for. I have told him it is not a stop at all. In the scriptorium Brother Osric taught us that the little hooked mark marks a breath, a place where the sense goes on but the voice must rest. I have spent three days with a chisel and I cannot bring myself to strike it.
So I have left it standing, with a rope strung around it and a board that reads Mind the Stones. I sat beside it at vespers yesterday and found I was counting my own breaths against it, which I suppose is the lesson Osric always gave and I always resisted.
Come up in the spring if you can. Bring the good trowel, and tell me whether you think the sentence is finished yet.
Yours in the dust, Brother Gilbert
