Shaded wing tattoo on a lower leg

Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A single wing is tattooed on the outer side of a lower leg, with the primary feathers pointing upward and the coverts curving down towards the ankle. The feathers are built up with soft grey shading and darker lines at their edges, giving a sense of depth and volume. The design is in black ink only and sits centred on the leg against a plain background of tiles and a dark sock.

The snow had shut the Carrick road by four, and by six Mrs Dunlop had stopped pretending the coal would last. Nine of them sat in the back parlour of the Bell at Scarth Cross, waiting for the ploughs, until the carrier, a long-jawed man called Tom Greave, lifted the sacking from the thing propped against the settle.

It was a plaster wing, one only, the length of a man's forearm. Ada Fell had made it in the spring for the church at Kirkby Lune, where the angel over the font had lost its left side to a falling beam. The vicar paid for one wing and sent the other back, saying it had come out heavier than it looked. She kept it. She had worked the feathers with a damp sponge and a bone-handled tool, cutting each primary a little deeper at the edge so the shadow would sit there like weather.

'Why the grey?' Tom asked. 'Stone is white.'

'Stone is white in the sun,' she said. 'Put it in a room with one candle and the light only reaches the tops of the feathers. The edges go dark where the air catches them. That's how you know it wants to go.'

Later, when the others slept under their coats and the fire had sunk to a red seam, Ada hung the wing on the nail above the hearth. The candle guttered. Its shadow lifted off the plaster and climbed the whitewash, feather by feather, until the wind outside dropped and the wing hung there, the only thing in the room that looked ready to leave.
