Shameless script on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up photograph of a single word, Shameless, tattooed in flowing script across the inner wrist. The linework is solid black with some soft grey shading along the strokes, and the skin around it is pale with a slightly out of focus background. The word sits centred and horizontal, filling most of the frame.

Sit down, sit down, and don't pretend you weren't listening. The summer of fifty-eight, the Palais had a tinny upright piano and a floor so waxed you could see the chandeliers in it. Maureen Tolley came through the doors in her brother's good gloves, asked the band for the Lindy hop twice running, and when old Harry on the drums muttered that she had no shame, she turned round and said, 'Then write it on me, Harry, so I never forget it.'

Harry didn't write it, but the next Saturday she came in with a fountain pen and a steady hand and the word looped in her own careful script across the back of her cuff. She danced every number with her arm held high so the whole hall could read it. Mothers pulled their daughters off the floor. The vicar's wife fanned herself with a programme. Maureen only laughed and spun, and every spin the ink caught the light.
Then came the turn. The judge of the jitterbug competition that August was Maureen's own mother, who had walked out on the family years before with a travelling fiddler. She looked at the word, looked at her daughter, and said nothing at all. She just stood up, crossed the floor, and took Maureen's hand for the last waltz. Nobody in that hall had ever seen a shameless thing so tender.
Harry still swears the band played that waltz slow on purpose. Maureen kept the pen. When people ask what the word means, she tells them it was the nicest thing anyone ever called her, and then she tells them to dance.
