Shark tattoos on fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand with pale pink nail polish is held against a white background, showing two shark designs in black ink on the fingers. The shark on the index finger has an open mouth with a row of teeth, drawn in thin, even outlines. The second shark, on the ring finger, is shown in profile with a fin and a simple line for the body, and both designs use only black ink with no shading.

Sit down, sit down, the queue isn't going anywhere and neither am I. You want to hear how the boatman's boy got past the estuary post? Then listen, because I only tell it once a winter.

Pieter Vos was the clerk at that frontier, a thin man who kept his ink pot beside the stamp and never once lifted his eyes from the ledger. Every lorry that came over the bridge had to show its papers and open its doors. So when a lad came across with a crate of salt cod and nothing on his forms but a grin, Pieter wrote him down as a smuggler before he had said a word.
The boy held up his hand. On the first finger a shark rose with its jaw open, every tooth drawn in a line finer than a hair. On the next finger another shark swam past in profile, its fin cutting across the knuckle like a blade. Pieter stared at those little fish for a long time. He had spent thirty years learning that men lie with their mouths, never with their hands, and here were two sharks that would not stop swimming.
The boy said they had come up the river with him and would go on swimming wherever the cod was sold. Pieter stamped the crate and passed it through without opening it. Later, they say, he took his own pen and drew a small fin on the back of his left hand, where the ink never quite washed off, and he never again asked a fisherman what was in the hold.
