Ship in a bottle and anchor on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A three-masted sailing ship sits inside a bottle shape on the forearm, with dark clouds, a red sky and teal waves below it. A rope runs from the bottle's neck to a red-tipped anchor on the wrist side. The outlines are bold and the shading is solid, with colour ink dominating the waves, sky and anchor against a grey-black ink base.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bottle had sat on the windowsill of the Gull and Lantern for three winters before anyone thought to ask what was inside it. Old Tobiah Crane swore it was the Marigold, lost off the Vellmoor reef with all hands, and that the sea had shrunk her down to fit the glass so she could be carried home.

I didn't believe him. I was nineteen and wanted a ship of my own more than I wanted sense, so I borrowed a fathom of tarred hemp from the chandler and went out past the breakwater on the ebb. The sky over the Teeth had gone the colour of a cut lip. Storm weather, plain as print, and I should have turned back.

I found the anchor on the sand at low water, fluked and red with rust, and tied the rope to its shank the way Crane had shown me. When I pulled, the sea went flat as a plate for the length of a breath. Then a three-masted shape rose through the chop, sails furled grey as slate, a red moon hanging low over her bow like a coin someone had dropped.

Crane was waiting on the quay when I came in soaked to the bone. He took the bottle from my hands, held it to the lantern and turned it slowly. "Marigold," he said. "Still wants her anchor back." I looked, and the hull inside the glass had stopped rolling, and there was one more rope on her deck than there had been before.
