Single line cat on an arm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A cat is drawn in one unbroken black line, with a rounded head, pointed ears, a long curved tail and legs formed by looping strokes. The linework is even and thin, with no shading or fill, so the design relies entirely on the outline. The tattoo is shown in close-up on pale skin against white fabric, with the cat centred in the frame.

The lion had gone in March, sold to a park in Kent for less than the diesel it had cost to move him, and by October the big top was patched in three shades of canvas that did not belong together. Edie Marsh sat on an upturned crate by the menagerie wagon and counted cats rather than takings. There were two left. Pilot was grey, bad-tempered and nine years old, and had never once jumped through anything he could walk around. Smoke, younger and dim-eyed, went wherever Pilot went.

Teddy Pyne drew the posters, though he had not performed in a decade. He sat on the step with a pencil and a feed sack flattened across his knees and drew the cat without lifting the pen. "A cat never leaves the line it starts," he said, when Edie asked why he bothered. "You just have to trust where it's going." His first attempt came out as a tangle and he fed it to the stove. The second, pinned to the ticket booth, had a tail that curled up like the last note of a tune nobody could finish.
On the final night it rained hard enough to drown the band. Nineteen people paid at the gate. Edie laid the rolled rail along the sawdust and Pilot stepped onto it, slowly, tail high, and walked the full circle without a glance at the seats. Nobody had asked him to do that. When he reached the start he sat down exactly where he had begun, and the nineteen clapped anyway, loudly, as if it had been a leap through fire.
