Single-line cat on a lower leg

Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A cat in profile is drawn as one unbroken black outline, with the tail curling upwards and the head turned to the left. The linework is even and fine, with no shading or fill inside the figure. The tattoo sits on skin against a white fabric background, and the image is shown in neutral daylight.

Dear Marguerite,

The ferry didn't come on Tuesday, so the post sat in the harbour office with the rest of us waiting. Mr Penhallow says the cat that lives under the pier has been stealing the mackerel from the drying racks again, and I have decided to believe him, because it is the only excitement this island has had since the lighthouse lamp was automated. I walked down this morning with a tin of pilchards and found her curled on the slipway, one ear torn, looking at me the way the vicar looks at a hymn he hasn't rehearsed. I didn't try to pick her up. I just sat on the wet stone and talked about the weather until she got bored and went round the back of the net loft in one long, unhurried line, tail last, like someone signing their name without lifting the pen.

You always said I never finished anything. Well, I finished the ledger for the Co-op and the jam for the church fête, and I have started counting the days until your visit, which I suppose counts as finishing something too. The lamp keeper's boy has asked me to draw the cat for him, so I have been practising in the margins of the tide tables, trying to get the head to turn without the body following it into a knot.

Come in June. Bring the blue cardigan. The cat will pretend not to remember you, and then she will sit on your feet.

All my love, Nell
