Single-line dancer with quote text
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A single continuous dark line forms the outline of a dancer with one arm raised overhead, the other extended to the side, and one leg bent behind her. Two lines of handwritten script sit below the figure, one at the left and one at the lower right. The ink is a uniform dark line on a plain cream background, with no shading.

Dear Ada,

The Bramleys came in early this year, so the whole village has been up the ladders since Monday and Mum has her knees wrapped in old stockings. Mr Pryce from the lower farm says the rain has made the apples sweeter, though I told him sweet apples are no comfort to a man with a bad back. I am writing because the postman brought your envelope with the London stamp, and I have read your drawing a dozen times over the washing up.
You never could lift your pencil. Do you remember Miss Fenwick's chalk on the schoolroom slate, and how you would trace a whole horse without stopping, so the tail ran straight into the mane? The dancer you sent is like that. One unbroken line from the raised hand down to the pointed toe, and the words beneath her like a stage direction shouted from the wings. I laughed out loud at the second sentence. Mrs Pryce asked what was so funny, and I said my sister has been told off by a choreographer again.
Tell me the truth now. Are they the ones who will not like it? Or is that you talking to yourself at two in the morning in a rented room?
Come home for the picking if you can. The orchard is gold at the top of the hill and the wasps are drunk on windfalls. Leave the dancer in London if you must, but bring the pencil.
Love, Nell
