Sisters script inside a swirled heart
Fine line · Back · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a heart outline built from thin swirling scrolls, with the word Sisters written in a flowing script across the lower half. The linework is fine and even, and the ink is a single solid blue with no shading. The design is centred on pale skin and photographed straight on with a plain, soft background.

The ovens have been ticking since half past three, and you have been up to your wrists in dough since before the bakery's rain-dark windows began to lighten. Maeve comes in late, hair still wet, and drops her bike against the proving cabinet without apology. She has never once been on time for a four o'clock shift, and you have never once asked her to be.

Neither of you speaks for a while. The radio on the shelf murmurs about the ferry timetable. She takes the scraper and works the sticky cooling rack clean, the way your mother taught you both at this same steel bench, back when the place still belonged to Nan Oddie and smelled of cardamom instead of bleach. You shape the loaves into tight rounds and score each one with a single slash, the blade sliding through the skin like a pen through good paper.
Somewhere around the fourth tray she laughs at something you didn't say, and you remember the summer you swore on the back step that you would open a bakery by the sea, that you would give it a ridiculous name, and that you would never be apart long enough for the sign to need repainting. The sign is still on the wall, a little faded at the edges. Nobody ever got round to choosing the name.
When the first grey light slides under the door, Maeve wipes her hands on her apron and draws a small heart in the flour on the bench, then drags a swirl through it with one finger, the way you used to in the margins of school exercise books. Neither of you wipes it away. The bread goes out into the cold street, and the heart stays on the bench until the morning rush carries it off on a stranger's sleeve.
