Sisters script on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows the word Sisters written in a thin, flowing script in black ink on the inner forearm. The linework is fine and even, with small looping strokes in the capital S and the letter t. The image is black and white, with a knitted sleeve at the wrist and a blurred background that keeps the focus on the lettering.

Years later the mine closed on a Tuesday and nobody in Ferndale knew what to do with their hands. Your sister Bron stood at the bottom of the Jubilee steps with a flask of stewed tea and a face like a shut door. You didn't speak to her for eleven months over a kitchen clock she'd taken to Cardiff. Then the winter came hard and the pipes froze, and you found yourself knocking on her back door at six in the morning with two bags of coal you had no business carrying.

She didn't say anything. She took one bag, you took the other, and you walked it up the hill in the dark with the lamps of the last shift men gone home behind you. At her step she pulled up her cardigan sleeve to scratch her wrist, and there was the old word in your own loopy hand, the one you'd copied from Nan's slate. Hers had faded to grey, same as yours. Neither of you mentioned it. You just kept walking up the hill.
