Six gold and black heart designs

Mixed · Flash

The image shows six heart designs arranged in two rows of three on a plain white background. The left and right columns use gold foil, with outline hearts on top and solid hearts below, while the centre column uses black ink in the same outline and solid pattern. The hearts are simple, bold shapes with clean edges and even spacing, giving a balanced, symmetrical composition.

You cut the stencils at the kitchen table of the lorry while Mr Dunmore counts the last of the takings through the wall. The card is cheap grey board from the feed merchant in Ludlow, and the gold is leaf you bought with the money set aside for diesel. The template got rained on, so you draw the first heart freehand. It comes out wider than you meant and leaning slightly, like something that has been carried a long way and set down to rest.

Three outlines, three solids, two rows. Gold at the sides, black in the middle, because the middle is the one people look at when the lights drop and the band strikes up. The trapeze twins want them stitched onto their leotards for the final bill in Shrewsbury, though nobody has said so in plain words. Nobody pays to see a show with peeling paint on the big top, but they will pay to watch two girls in hearts swing out over the sawdust.

Mr Dunmore comes in as you're trimming the last solid. He sits down heavily on the bench and tells you the bank has the wagons and the tent poles will be sold to a scrapyard in Crewe. He doesn't ask you to leave. He picks up one of the black hearts, holds it to the window, and turns it until the light runs along its edge. Then he says a thing doesn't have to be worth much to be kept, and you let him believe you agree.

On the last night you pin the six hearts to the inside of the ticket booth, where the tent flap ties back and the rain can't reach. The gold catches the spill from the arc lamp and throws it across the empty seats. By morning the wagons are gone, and only the hearts are left, still pinned in their two rows, looking out at a field that is about to be ploughed.
