Six printed temporary tattoo designs of cartoon racing cars, checkered flags and a gold trophy on a white background.

Six racing car temporary tattoo designs

Mixed · Flash

Six separate temporary tattoo designs are arranged on a plain white background, each on its own square backing. The motifs are cartoon racing cars, checkered flags and a gold trophy, with some framed by orange and yellow star bursts. The designs use bold outlines and flat colour with glossy highlights and simple shading, and they are scattered across the frame at varied angles.

Shift up, Dennis, you're sat on the tea urn and it's still warm. Right. Where was I? Ah, the prize table at Pyle's Travelling Fair, the summer the big dipper caught fire and nobody got a refund.

My brother Ray had the stall next to the candyfloss, six sheets of tattoo transfers pinned under a bit of gingham. Red stock car with the white stripe, a yellow single-seater with its nose in the air, a hot rod with flames painted up its bonnet, a pair of chequered flags, and a gold cup wrapped in orange stars. Each one sat on its own little square of backing paper. Ray peeled them warm from the tin and said they'd last a week if you didn't scrub, which was a lie, but a kind one.

A lad came by with his pocket money gone to the coconut shy and nothing to show for it. Thin as a rake, trainers held together with tape. He wanted the cup. Ray looked at him for a long moment, then licked the back of the stars and pressed it onto the boy's wrist himself. "Wear that on the hill," Ray said. "Cold Harbour, Saturday. Soapbox race. Don't look down."

The lad came third. Nobody in the village had ever seen a soapbox go that fast, and the cup on his wrist caught the sun the whole way down, or so he swore to everyone after. He kept it on for nine days, through two baths and a row with his gran, until it faded to a grey ghost of itself.

I've still got the chequered flag Ray put on my own hand that same summer. Look, if you squint. Gone the colour of dishwater, but it's still waving.
