Temporary tattoo sheets: desserts and arrows
Mixed · Flash
Two kraft card packaging sleeves display sheets of temporary tattoo designs with a clear window. The left sheet shows a pink iced donut, two ice cream cones and two mint popsicles, drawn with simple outlines and flat fills. The right sheet shows a row of hand-drawn arrows with feathered tips in pink, mint, green and black, set against a plain white background.

Dear Tom,

The woman at the Sunbeam Stop has run out of ice cream but not of patience, so I'm writing this at the counter while a fan pushes the flies from one side of the room to the other. The road out of Calder Wells runs east for eighty miles without a bend, and past the salt flat the signs stop bothering with town names and give you arrows instead. I counted nineteen before I stopped counting. Every one pointed the same way, which told me I was on the right road, and also that I wasn't going to find an easy way back.
You'd laugh at what I bought. In the wire rack by the till there were sheets of temporary tattoos in brown card sleeves: a pink iced donut, two popsicles the colour of toothpaste, a soft-serve cone, and a row of feathered arrows in mint, pink and black. I bought the arrows. The woman said nobody buys them any more, that they're for children and for grown-ups who've forgotten how to be silly. I pressed the mint one onto the inside of my wrist, rubbed the paper with a wet thumb, and peeled it away to find a green feather sitting on my skin like it had always been there.
It hasn't faded. It's three days now, and every time I reach for the wheel it's there, pointing back the way I came, towards your kitchen and Mum's terrible radio. I keep telling myself it's just ink that will wear off in a week, but I'm not sure I want it to.
I'll post this from the next town. If it reaches you before I do, tell Mum I'm eating a donut in the desert and I'm not sorry.
Love, Jo
