Colour · Flash

Eight small cards each show a cartoon Hello Kitty design, including rainbows, balloons, hearts, stars, bows and a gift box, with the words HELLO KITTY printed in some. The outlines are bold and simple with flat fills in pink, green, yellow, purple and blue. The cards are arranged in a loose grid on a pale textured background, and no skin is visible.

At the school reunion in Little Harrow, nobody could say who had brought the white cat with the red bow. It sat under the trestle table by the urn, beside a paper bag of barley sugars, and when Maud Penrose bent down to look, it lifted one paw as though it had been waiting for her. Maud had left the village at eighteen and had not thought of the old classroom in twenty years.

The cat did not speak, but it did not need to. Each time someone reached for the sweets, a balloon appeared from nowhere, pink and then green and then yellow, tied to the cloakroom hooks. Old Mr Dacre, who had taught them sums with a wooden ruler, stood up and said he had lost his spectacles in 1981 and would someone please look for them. The cat pushed a small heart-shaped box across the floor with its nose, and inside were the spectacles, folded neatly.

'It's my turn to say sorry,' said Maud, and she told the room about the pencil case shaped like a star that she had taken from Ruth Fenwick's desk and never given back. The hall went quiet. Then Ruth laughed, the balloons drifted up to the rafters, and the cat sat down and washed its face as if the matter were settled.

When the caretaker came to lock up, the table was bare except for a purple star cut from card. On the back someone had written in careful capitals: TELL THE TRUTH AND THE RAINBOW STAYS. Maud pinned it to her coat and walked home in the rain, and the rainbow, faint over the church, stayed exactly where it was until she reached her door.
