Six sun and mandala flash designs

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

The sheet shows six separate circular designs in black linework on a white background. The motifs include a dotted sun, a sun with a face and wavy rays, a spiral flower-like circle, a yin yang with patterned sections, a patterned sun with hatched rays and a ring-shaped mandala. Lines are even and clean, with dotwork and hatching used for fill and detail.

The sheet had been pinned behind the counter of a petrol station in Tonopah for so long that the sun on it had faded to grey, and you were the only one who ever looked at it. Marta, who ran the till, said the designs came from a man who drew them on the backs of invoices while he waited for his brother to finish rebuilding a truck. You took the sheet down anyway and folded it into your jacket, past the dead fan and the bottle of cold coffee nobody wanted.

The road out ran straight for forty miles without a bend. Heat rose off the tarmac in sheets, and the dotted sun in the top left corner stared up at you from the passenger seat every time you glanced down. You told yourself it was only paper. By the third hour you had started counting the dots, and by the fourth you had lost count and begun again, which was how you knew you had stopped driving and started thinking.

A pickup pulled alongside near a dry lake bed and the driver lifted two fingers from the wheel. You lifted yours back. Beyond him the ground split into pale plates, each one curled at the edges into the same spiral as the flower in the middle of the sheet, and you pictured the man with the pen, drawing circles inside circles so the eye would have somewhere to rest.

At the next junction you pulled onto the shoulder, spread the sheet across the wheel, and studied the yin and yang with its hatched sun sitting in the black half like a coal. The sun with the face was either smiling or squinting, and it was hard to tell which. You decided it was squinting, folded the paper along its old creases, and drove on towards the light.
