Skeleton and woman with a bird on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded black and grey tattoo shows a skeleton with visible ribs, its skull resting near a woman's profile with an upswept hair bun and closed eyes. A small bird perches on the skeleton's raised finger, and the bones are rendered with bold outlines and fine hatching. The tattoo sits on pale skin against a patterned teal fabric background.

The fair came into Harrowgate Meadow the week after the frost, and the bone man rode in on the back of the organ wagon with his ribs showing through a coat that had once been red. Nobody had hired him. Each year he simply appeared, and each year the Corbett girl, who sold ribbons from a tray, gave him a heel of bread. He gave her nothing back but a whistle, because he had no mouth to speak of.

The bird was a wren with a brass ring on one leg. It sat on his raised finger all day and told him what the crowd was saying, since he could not hear it for himself. That summer it told him the Corbett girl was to marry the strongman, a man who wrapped his wrists in leather and laughed loudest at his own jokes.
On the night before the wedding the bone man went to the tent where she sat under a lamp, unpinning her hair one strand at a time. He did not frighten her. He set his skull on his knee and waited. When she asked what he wanted, the wren answered in a voice like a clock running down: a name, it said. Yours.
She gave him the pin from her hair. The wren took it in its beak and flew up into the rafters, and by morning the strongman's wagon had gone down the lane without a word. The bone man was still sitting by the lamp, the pin turning slowly in his fingers, and the crowd that came to the meadow that year could not agree on which of them had been left behind.
