Heart and fish hook on ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A single heart outline is formed by a fish hook, with its curved barb and eye shaping the top of the heart. The linework is thin and even, in one dark tone with no shading. The ankle sits in the foreground against blurred grass and sand, with the tattoo placed centrally and clearly in focus.

The hook had been in the biscuit tin since 1974, under the lead weights and a spool of nylon gone brittle with age, and Ivy Coombes only found it because the lid had finally stuck. She turned it over in her palm. Frank had bent it on the quay the night before their wedding, heating the shank over a paraffin lamp and coaxing the barb round until the eye and the curve met in a single loop. He said it was the only thing he had ever landed that was worth keeping. She told him to get on with mending his nets.

Now the wedding belonged to their granddaughter, Mia, and it was held on the sea wall at Burnham Overy, in a borrowed marquee the wind kept trying to lift off its pegs. Ivy found her in the back room of the village hall, pinning a veil that refused to lie flat. She held out the hook on a scrap of red thread. Mia took it and frowned at the shape. "It's a heart," she said. "It's a hook first," Ivy said. "They usually are, if you look at them long enough."

Mia tied it to a thin silver chain and fastened it at her own throat before anyone could argue. Outside, the vicar's voice rose and fell over the gusts, and the first vows drifted in through the flap of the tent. Beyond the wall the tide came up across the saltmarsh at its own unhurried pace, bringing in nothing and taking nothing away, which Frank would have called a fair catch.
