The rain had got under the awning by eleven, so I moved the cupcakes to the back shelf and told the girl on the next stall that the red was beetroot. She did not believe me, and she was right not to. It was raspberry, boiled down with a spoonful of sugar until it went thick enough to run, and it ran beautifully down the sides of everything I made on a wet Saturday.

My father never sold a cake in his life without making a joke about it. He kept a tin of silicone moulds in the cellar, and one of them was a skull the size of a plum, which he filled with dark fudge and set on top of the chocolate frosting like a crown. Customers screamed. Children came back with their mothers just to be screamed at again. When he died the moulds went into a shoebox under my bed, and I did not open it for two years.

Last Saturday a man in a green waxed jacket stood under the awning for a long time, watching the rain bead on the paper case of a cupcake he had not bought. Then he asked, quite seriously, whether the blood was real. I said it was jam. He said his nan had told him exactly the same thing when he was small, about everything, and he laughed and bought two.

That night I took the box out, found the skull cold and dusty at the bottom, and filled it with fudge the way he had shown me. In the morning the rain had stopped. I set one on the top shelf with the red running down its brow, and the first person who saw it stopped dead in the wet and reached for their purse.
