Realistic cherry cupcake on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a cupcake with a red paper case, a swirl of cream frosting and a glossy cherry on top, with chocolate pieces and dark berries on the frosting. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft highlights on the cream and deep shadows on the case. Brown chocolate splashes and swirls spread out beneath the cupcake, filling the lower part of the composition on the forearm.

The last tray went into the oven at ten to two, and the order was still wrong. Twelve cupcakes, Mrs Okafor had said, in the red paper cases, not the gold foil ones her husband hated, and she wanted them by six for a christening in Ancoats. I had made twelve. I had piped twelve swirls of vanilla cream as tall as a fist. What I had not done was top them, because the cherries had gone soft in their syrup and I was waiting on a tin that never arrived.

So I sat on an upturned crate in the back yard with the shutter half down, the city humming beyond the wall and the night bus sighing at the stop on Oldham Road. I melted dark chocolate in a bowl over a pan and let it run, the way you do when you are too tired to be neat. It poured over the crate's edge and spread across the concrete in thin brown fans, like something a tide leaves behind when it has nowhere else to go. My mother used to say a cake is only as honest as its last spoon.

At five the first van pulled in, and I went back inside with the jar I had nearly thrown out. The cherries at the bottom were firm and bright as a traffic light. I pressed one into the peak of each cream swirl and felt the small give of it, like a decision made without anyone asking.

Mrs Okafor's boxes went out at half six. She never came back to the shop, but the courier brought a card later with a child's drawing of a cupcake on it and one word underneath: enough. I stood in the doorway with the shutter up, licking chocolate from my thumb, and watched the sky turn the colour of the paper cases.
