Cupcake with cherry on a calf

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

A cupcake with white piped frosting and a glossy red cherry on top sits in a red wrapper at the centre of the design. Soft shading gives the frosting and cherry volume, and grey wisps and swirls curl around a dark teal and black background. The composition is circular and centred on the leg, with the cupcake as the clear focal point.

Get your coat off, love, you'll not need it out here, the night's warm enough to boil an egg. Pull that stool up. No, the one without the wobble. Right. Now, you want to know how Mrs Dorothy Pratt came to be selling cupcakes at a crossroads with nothing but a gas ring and a tin of tinned cherries between her and the dark? I'll tell you, though you'll not believe the half of it.

She had a sweetshop in Barstow once, before the railway pulled out and took the town with it. Every Friday she piped frosting like she was writing letters to somebody who'd moved away, great white curls of it, swirled the way the dust swirls when a lorry goes by on the highway. Her father always said a cake should have a red cherry on top, for luck, the way a lamp is left in a window. So she put a cherry on every one.

One night in August a man in a grey suit pulled his car up to her counter. He ordered a cupcake, paid with a coin he'd dug out of the sand, and asked for the cherry first, before the frosting. She thought it a peculiar request. But he ate it slow, and when he finished he said it tasted of a sea he'd lost years back. Then he handed her the car keys, walked off into the teal dark on foot, and never came back for the motor.

Mrs Pratt still has those keys. Every evening she lights her ring and bakes one cake more than she sells, and sets it out on the bonnet of that grey car. Nobody's ever claimed it. Don't look at me like that. Have your tea. It's on the house, and mind the stone in the cherry.
