Small anchor tattoo on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small anchor with a ring, shank and curved flukes sits on the side of an ankle. The outline and fill are solid black with no visible shading. The bright yellow-green sock and patterned fabric beneath dominate the colour of the photo, and the tattoo sits near the centre of the frame with clear skin around it.

Dear Ada, the ferry from Holyhead was late again, so I have been writing this on the upturned crate by the harbour office while the tide decides whether we sail tonight. You asked in your last letter whether the anchor I drew on the back of your father's ledger was meant as a joke. It was not. Mr Pryce at the customs shed keeps a tin of old pen nibs and a stamp that reads REFUSED, and he has been kind enough to let me borrow both while the Ruth Ellen waits for her papers.

The mate, Dilys Coombe, has stopped speaking to me since Thursday, when I told her the chart for the Menai run was three years out of date. She says a woman who trusts paper will drown on water, and I told her a woman who trusts nothing will never leave the quay. We were both right, which is no help to anyone. I have hung my oilskin on the nail where the old ship's bell used to be, and every time I pass it I think of the iron hook we dragged from the bottom of the harbour in March, black and furred with weed, the one that held her steady through the storm.

Mr Pryce says the papers will clear by the morning tide. I will post this when I can, and I will bring you the sixpence you lent me for the crossing, folded inside a page of the ledger. Keep the anchor drawing. It holds better on paper than I ever did.
