Small anchor tattoo on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small black anchor sits on the side of an ankle, drawn with thin, even linework and no shading. The skin is shown beside rolled light blue jeans and a white canvas sneaker with a blue stripe. The tattoo is placed low and centred, with a soft, out-of-focus dark vertical bar in the background.

The lost property office at Hollinwick closes at four, and Mrs Okafor has stopped pretending she doesn't know you by sight. You come in every Thursday with the same question, and every Thursday she lifts the same grey box from the shelf. You lift the lid and find a single brass key, a glove, a paperback with its spine broken. You have never once asked her what you are looking for, because you already know.

Your father worked the signal box at the end of Platform Two for thirty-one years, and the last thing he gave you before the stroke was a folded chart of the Humber estuary with a small anchor pencilled in the margin, neat and plain, with a ring at the top like the bow on a pocket watch. He said a boat never tells you where it's going, only where it's holding on. You put the chart in your coat and walked past the bookstall without buying anything.
Today the grey box holds a chart too. Not his, a different one, pale with damp, with the same little anchor in the margin. Underneath, in blue biro: Platform Two, 6.42, if you want it. Mrs Okafor watches you read it twice. "A man brought it in on Monday," she says. "Said you'd know what it meant."
The 6.42 is late. You stand on the yellow line with the chart in your hand, the wind coming down the platform carrying diesel and rain, and for once you don't check the board. You simply stay where you are, feet set on the wet paving, and let the train come to you.
