A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Thursday. Mr Hollis caught me at the sluice again, a bucket of lime slaking behind me, and made me stand still while he looked at the marks I had scratched into the iron. Three strokes: one upright, one tipped over like a gate hinge, one folded back on itself to a point. He asked who had taught me that. I said nobody, which was a lie, and he knew it, because he has measured this town's water for thirty years and can hear a lie in the way a man speaks about the tide.

It was Nan who taught me, at the kitchen table with the salt cellar between us. She could barely write her own name but she could read the river. Up, she said, tapping the upright. Turning, for the tipped one. Coming in hard for the point. She cut them on the back doorstep so the rain would wear them and nobody else would think them worth copying. I took them for a game until the October night the wind backed round to the north and she put her coat on over her nightdress and walked down to the staithe without a torch.

Tonight the wind has gone round again. I stood at the gate with the lamp and watched the water climb past the second mark, then the third, and I shouted the readings up the bank the way she taught me. Mr Hollis came running with the wheel key before he had finished buttoning his coat. He asked me nothing. He opened the gate on the point, the level dropped, and he said, quite quietly, that the marks would go into the ledger in the morning, under my name.
