Small black cross on preserved skin
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a small black cross on the dried, leathery skin of a preserved limb. The linework is simple and solid, with no shading, and a small pale spot sits just above the centre of the cross. The brown skin fills most of the frame, with crinkled silver foil visible at the edges and along the bottom.

You log the cold store at ten past two because the night sister on Ward 9 has asked for the pathology temperature sheet and nobody else will sign for it. The corridor lights hum at the pitch they always hum. In the back lab the foil on the steel bench is still crumpled from the last tray, so you smooth a corner flat before you lift anything, the way Ilse Marr taught you before she retired to the coast and stopped answering the phone.

Under the lamp the cross is smaller than you expected, a neat black mark no wider than your thumb, drawn with a steady hand and no fuss. Just above its centre sits a pale spot, a little hollow where the surface has lifted, and you lean closer until your breath fogs the foil. Ilse used to say a mark is only a question someone leaves for whoever is awake next. You have never known whether she meant the ink or the light.
The sheet needs a temperature, a name, a time. You write 02:14, cold, all present, and then you stop with the pen above the box. The photograph for the archive is your job too, so you raise the camera, and the flash finds the pale spot again and shows you what it is: the tiny crater where a pin once held the design still while the ink went in.
You fold the foil back over the edges, leave the lamp on low, and sign your initials under hers in the margin, the way she always did. Nothing has moved. Somebody made a choice in the dark, and you have simply kept the light on for it.
