Small black symbol tattoo on an ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small black symbol sits on the side of an ankle, formed from a closed loop with a curved stroke rising from its top. The linework is solid and even, with no shading, and the ink is a uniform dark tone against the skin. The photograph is taken at a slight angle with the leg in the foreground, a rolled denim cuff above and black suede heeled shoes below.

The officer at Carrow Bridge does not look up from his ledger when you set your papers on the counter. Rain ticks against the tin roof of the hut. He turns your passport over twice, as though the back might say something different from the front, then runs a thumb along the edge of the stamp from the last crossing, the one from the spring you would rather not discuss.

"Business or pleasure?" he asks. You tell him the truth, which is that your grandmother drew a mark on a beer mat in the kitchen at Halden Row and made you promise to carry it over the border, since paper had a way of going missing. It was a loop with a hook rising from its crown, like a key that had forgotten its lock. He wants to know what it means. You say she never told you, only that it would open things when the time came, and that you have never once known her to be wrong about a door.
He studies the beer mat you have pressed between two sheets of cardboard, then your face, then the mat again. Somewhere behind him a kettle starts to sing and nobody moves to lift it. Finally he takes up his stamp, presses it hard into the violet pad, and brings it down on the page with a dull, decisive thump. The ink lands a little crooked.
He does not wave you through. Instead he takes a pencil from behind his ear and draws, very carefully, the same small loop and hook in the margin of his ledger, beside a column of names he has not finished. Then he lifts the barrier with a clank. On the far side the road runs dry under a clearing sky, and the river is exactly where she said it would be.
