Small bow outline on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small bow is drawn in a single black outline on the inner wrist, with a central knot and two loose trailing ribbons. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill inside the shape. The photo shows a hand resting with fingers curled, against a dark, softly lit background.

The wind has been off the Skerry for three days, and you have stopped counting the hours by the bell. Instead you count ribbons. There are four left in the tin on the lamp-room sill, faded to the colour of weak tea, and the last one has a frayed end you keep meaning to trim. Your daughter tied the first one to the rail the winter she turned nine, so you could see which way the wind was blowing, she said, and you laughed and let her do it.

Tonight you climb the iron stairs with the tin under your arm and the smell of paraffin in your coat. The wick needs trimming, the lens needs a rub with the chamois, and the glass is clouded with salt. You work the way your father taught you, slowly and without talking to yourself. When you finish, you tie a ribbon into a bow the way she did, two loops and two trailing ends, and knot it to the brass rail where the lamp can reach it.
Down on the water, a single red sail has been wandering since dusk. You cannot see the boat, only the small flicker of colour where the light catches the ribbon and throws it outward, a shape you could draw from memory. Whoever is out there will steer by the beam, not by a scrap of silk, but you like to think a small thing can still be noticed from a long way off.
By dawn the sail has slipped into the harbour mouth. You untie the ribbon, fold it into the tin with the others, and leave the rail bare. The gulls are already back on the gallery, and the kettle needs filling before the tide turns.
