At the crossing at Halm Bridge there was a rule about anything that grew: nothing green went over the water without paper. So when the old woman set the clay pot on the counter, Ilse Marek put down her stamp and sighed. "Plants need a form," she said, and reached for one.

The woman had no paper. She had a cardboard tag with a name on it in faded ink, and a story about a sister's windowsill on the far bank, where the cactus had sat in the sun for thirty years and been forgotten by everyone except the sister. The sister was gone now. The cactus, the woman said, had not been told yet. Ilse looked at the plant, round and squat, with a ring of small pale spines and one new bud the colour of a fingernail, and thought it looked like something that had got through a great deal on very little water.
She filled the form in herself. Under goods she wrote one cactus, in pot, carried by hand. Under owner she wrote the sister's name, because it was the only name on the tag. Then she stamped it twice, once for the crossing and once, quietly, for the windowsill.
The woman folded the form into her coat and lifted the pot with both hands, careful as someone carrying a lamp. Ilse watched her walk toward the far bank, the green head swaying a little after her in the wind, as if it knew the road.
