Hand · Mixed · Photo

Two small cartoon tattoos sit on adjacent fingers. The left shows a smiling orange pumpkin with black eyes and a green vine, and the right shows a white ghost with an open mouth and dark hair on a red-pink shape. The bold outlines and flat, simple shading are set against a colourful, patterned tattoo flash background.

The pumpkin had sat on the sill of number nine since the first of October, and by the thirty-first its grin had gone soft at the corners. Its candle was a stub of white wax that nobody had replaced, so Gordon, a ghost cut from a bedsheet with a hole for a mouth, had taken it upon himself to keep the orange fellow company through the dark.

"You're not frightening anyone like that," said Gordon, who had spent the whole evening trying to scare the cat off the garden wall. "Your eyes are the wrong shape."

"They were drawn by a child who was very pleased with them," said the pumpkin, whose name was Mabel and who had a green vine curling out of her stalk and over the edge of the sill like a loose ribbon. "Every year the children come up the path with their sacks and say, Mabel, you look delicious. I do not think that is an insult. I think it is a compliment."

Down the street a door banged. Feet slapped over wet pavement, torches swung across the hedges, and a small voice shouted for a ghost. Gordon lifted off the sill, found his hem caught fast on the vine, and for once did not drift away. "Hold on," said Mabel. "I have never once let go of anything I was given."

They sat together until the torches had gone home and the street lamps had hummed themselves quiet, the vine stretched tight between them, and at dawn the candle finally guttered out.
