Cartoon duck heads across four fingers

Hand · Colour · Photo

Four cartoon duck heads are tattooed one per finger, with the left-most wearing a black top hat with a red band and the others wearing green, red and blue caps. The bold outlines and flat colour fills give the figures a clean, illustrated look, with simple shading on the cheeks and beaks. The tattoos sit close together across the knuckles and fingers, with a dark background behind the hand.

The eldest, Tobias, wore his grandfather's black top hat with the red band pulled down to his eyebrows, and he was the only one who ever spoke to the gardener. "We want the pond," he said, which was the first sensible thing a duck had ever said in that garden. The other three nodded in their caps, green, red and blue, each holding a bean as proof of trespass.

Ambrose offered them a bargain: the pond for the summer if they kept the slugs off the lettuces. Tobias shook on it with a wing and spat into his palm to seal it. Nobody had ever told Ambrose ducks could spit.

By August the slugs were gone, the lettuces were enormous, and the fox had taken up knitting. Tobias still wore the hat at the pond's edge, reading the paper upside down, and when Ambrose asked whether the bargain still held, he only tipped the brim and said the pond was theirs, the beans were not, and a deal was a deal in any garden worth the name.
