Small cat outline on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline tattoo of a sitting cat sits on the side of a finger, drawn in a single dark, even line with no shading. The photograph is black and white, with a silver band ring on the adjacent finger and a blurred, patterned background. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame and is the clear focus.

The lorry drivers leave it sardines in tin lids, and Sergeant Brandt insists a cat is a matter for the animal wardens, though the wardens have never once come.

The man from the far side of the river swore it was his last winter, so we logged it as a visitor. It has crossed in the mail sorting shed twice since, once inside a crate of Bavarian cheese. Brandt has stopped complaining. He sits with it at lunch now and pretends he is not.
Yesterday a woman joined the queue with one grey suitcase and a shoebox tied with string. She had her passport ready and her face was tired. When the cat stood up and walked under the barrier, she set the box down on the tarmac, watched it go, and then, without a word, she followed it through. I called after her that she had not been cleared. She turned, looked at me, and said she had nothing to declare except that she had been waiting a long time for something to lead her across. I stamped nothing. I simply watched the cat sit down on the far side and wash one paw, as if it had been expecting her all along.
