Small cloud outline on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand is held up against a rain-streaked window, with black nail polish on each finger and two silver rings. A small, simple cloud outline sits on the middle finger, drawn in thin black linework with no shading. The muted green and grey background of the window and tracks keeps the focus on the tattoo and the hand.

The rain had been on the sill since Tuesday, and Maud Pennick had stopped pretending the ledger was for anyone but herself. Cold Harrow Halt was four platforms short of a town and one short of a timetable, and the 7.12 to Carrow came when the signal let it. She wrote the weather first, before the times, because the weather was the thing that moved the trains.

Her brother Tom had drawn the cloud for her on the back of a fare receipt the winter their mother died, a flat little lump with a dip underneath, and she had copied it into every wet day since. Showers got a cloud with a tail. Fog got three wavy lines and a question mark she never explained. Full rain got a cloud and nothing else, the pencil pressed hard enough to dent the next page.
On the Thursday the glass ran with water so thick the fields beyond the cutting had gone to smudge. A man in a wax coat stood under the canopy with a suitcase and asked when the train would be in. Maud looked at the page, then at the clock, then at the grey pressing down on the rails. 'When the rain lets it,' she said, and he laughed, the way people do when they think you are being clever.
She drew the cloud anyway, a little larger than usual, and under it wrote the time the first train passed through dry. Eleven minutes past nine. It was the first entry in a month she did not have to cross out.
