Small dashed heart on an inner wrist

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small heart drawn as a dashed outline sits on the inner wrist, with the stitch-like gaps spaced evenly around the shape. The fine black lines are clean and sit on a flat area of skin with little shading. The photograph is in black and white, with a leather wrap bracelet and a dark bead fastening at the lower edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Ibbotson had been pricking pattern paper for forty years, and she could tell from the ticking of the wheel whether the cloth would hold. Today it was the grey worsted for the Hallam coat, and the wheel ran true, leaving its little dashes across the lining like a line of footprints in frost. Nobody in the workroom asked why she still used a tracing wheel when the young ones had their chalk and their laser pointers, because nobody else cut as neatly as she did.

The coat was for a man called Desmond, who had sat two desks behind her son at the grammar school and who had written in a careful hand that he wanted it for a reunion dinner in Harrogate. Thirty years, he said. He wanted the shoulders to sit as they had when he was nineteen, which was impossible, and she told him so. He laughed down the telephone like someone who had expected to be told.

When she came to the pocket she stopped. Someone had already tacked a small heart into the lining of the pattern, a loose outline of thread that nobody had bothered to pull out, and the dashes ran around it in an even row. She knew the hand. It was her own, from a Saturday in 1979 when she had marked a sample for her daughter's school project and kept the offcut in a biscuit tin.

She cut the heart out, folded it twice, and slipped it into the inside pocket before the coat went into its box. Desmond would find it at the dinner or he wouldn't, and either way the shoulders would sit well.
