Small lotus flower on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small lotus flower outline sits on the inner wrist, drawn in thin, even black linework with no shading. The petals are pointed and the flower has a simple, symmetrical structure. The tattoo occupies a small part of the frame, which otherwise shows plain skin against a soft grey background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The windfalls had started early that year, and Nell Ashby had been filling the trug since six, sorting the bruised from the sound. The orchard ran down to a clay pond where her father had dug a drainage ditch in 1961 and then forgotten it. Her brother's tin sat on the potting bench under a jam jar, the one he had posted from Lahore with a note saying only: plant these where the water sits still.

She had not planted them. She had opened the tin twice and closed it again, because the seeds looked like small grey pebbles and she could not believe anything inside them was still alive. Ray from the cider barn said lotus seed could sit for centuries in peat and still come up, which was the sort of thing Ray said about everything, usually while eating an apple he had not paid for.

That evening the wasps were thick over the drops and the light lay gold across the rows. Nell waded out to the pond's edge in her boots, pushed a handful of mud into a yoghurt pot, and pressed three seeds in with her thumb. The air smelled of bruised fruit and wet leaves, and somewhere behind the hedge a tractor was winding down for the night.

Three weeks later, when the cider apples were turning and nobody was looking at the water, a single pointed leaf lifted out of the pond, folded tight as a pen nib. She knelt on the bank and watched the petals open one after another, pale and certain, and she did not write to Tom yet. She wanted to see it first.
