Small cross tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hand with white nail polish and one gold glitter nail. A small black cross sits on the side of a finger, drawn with thin, even linework and no shading. The plain background of tiles and a grey appliance keeps the focus on the tattoo and the nails.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Come closer, for the fire is low and this part is for those who are listening. In the kingdom of Harrowmere, where the river froze every winter and the bells rang backwards to keep the ice away, there lived a ferrywoman named Ysolde Penn. She carried the dead across the black water and the living back again, and she charged one copper for each crossing. She never once took a coin from a child, which the ferryman's guild thought foolish.

One grey morning a boy came down the bank with a pocketful of pebbles and asked for passage to the far shore, where his mother had gone to sell her geese. Ysolde told him the fare was not a penny but a promise. He must be back before the bells rang forward. He swore it, so she took a thorn and a pinch of soot from the hearth and drew a small cross on his hand, neat and thin, with no shading at all, so the river would know him when he returned.

The boy crossed and came home by dusk with a goose under each arm and a story to tell. Every crossing after, he reached for the rope with that hand before anyone else could take it. The years went by. The bells rang forward and backward, and the ice came and went, and still he paid his promise in the same way, one small mark at a time.

When Ysolde's boat finally drifted to the reeds without her, they found a copper on the bank, bright as a new coin, and beside it a boy's pebble, worn smooth by a thumb. Nobody in Harrowmere has ever wanted to be the one to take it.
