Wanderlust script on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo reads "Wanderlust" in a flowing script, with a long looping flourish running beneath the letters. The linework is thin and even, in a single dark ink. The hand is raised against a dark blue textured background, with pale nails and two rings visible, and the tattoo sits near the centre of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Tomasz, the ferry timetable on the board at Penhallow says the last boat across to the island leaves at half four, and I have decided I am going to miss it on purpose. Your mother will tell you I have gone soft in the head, and she will be right, but I have been sitting on the harbour wall since noon watching the gulls argue over a crust, and I keep thinking about what you said in March, that a word can be a map if you draw the road under it.

So I have drawn it. Your father's old fountain pen is in my bag, the one with the cracked cap, and I used it on the back of the chandlery receipt, a long looping line that starts under the first letter and runs the whole length of the name, then curls back on itself like a rope left out to dry. I will not pretend it is good penmanship. The ink ran where the cap leaked. But it is the road, and it goes further than the harbour does.

The fog is coming in over the breakwater now and the bell buoy has started. I am not coming back to the flat tonight. I will leave the key under the pot of basil, where you always say I should not leave it, and I will write again from wherever the ink runs out. Do not come looking. Follow the line instead.

Yours, with the loop still wet, Ines
