Dear Tom, the beech by the stile has been cut at last, and Father sent me to clear the bracken from its roots before the timber men came with their carts. I sat on the stump a long while. The rooks went up out of the Hanger in one black sheet when the saw started, and Mrs Pardoe came down the lane with her basket to ask whether it was true the wood was to be sold to a man from London. I said it was. She said the crown would have to come out too, and I said no, it would not, because I would take it off myself with my knife if anyone tried.

I did not. I cut a square of bark the size of my palm instead, and wrapped it in your old grey muffler, and it is in the drawer under the window now. Father thinks it is kindling. Perhaps it is, in the end.

Come home at Michaelmas and we will bury it in the parish ground, beside the stone with the cross, where at least the crown will have somewhere to rest. Your loving sister, Nell. P.S. The rooks have not forgiven either of us.
